Moscow – Kenyan singer and actress Sanaipei Tande carried the country’s flag high on Saturday, September 20, at the International Music Contest Intervision, staged at the Live Arena in Moscow, Russia.
The glittering competition featured performers from 21 countries across BRICS, CIS, Africa, Latin America, Asia, and even the U.S., with each artist presenting music inspired by themes of love, unity, and cultural pride.
Sanaipei, affectionately known as Sanaa by fans, performed her soulful track Flavour before an international jury. While Kenya finished 18th overall, beating Ethiopia, Egypt, and Brazil, her participation marked a proud milestone for the East African music scene.
Organizers described Intervision as more than just a contest. “Our goal is to create strong connections and new musical traditions,” explained Russian producer and jury member Igor Matvienko.
After an evening of dazzling performances, Vietnam’s Duc Phuc clinched the crown with a powerful, folklore-inspired ballad, earning a cash prize of 30 million roubles (Ksh. 46 million). Kyrgyzstan and Qatar placed second and third respectively, while Russia’s own entrant, controversial singer Shaman, withdrew from contention as the host country’s act.
Despite not placing among the top contenders, Sanaipei’s performance was widely praised for its authenticity and vocal strength. Her appearance on the global stage came two decades after her rise to fame through the East Africa Coca-Cola Popstars Talent Search in 2004, which launched the iconic group Sema and her enduring solo career.
While in Moscow, Sanaipei also paid a courtesy call to Kenya’s ambassador to Russia, Peter Mathuki, alongside members of the Kenyan delegation.
The contest, watched by millions across Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe, will shift to Saudi Arabia in 2026 after its debut in Moscow. For Sanaipei, the performance adds yet another chapter to a multifaceted career spanning music, acting, broadcasting, and club hosting.
